Almost half their squad is carrying some kind of niggle and their team selection will be interesting here with a host of players touch and go to make it. The Argentine is a key figure in the midfield and his absence is certainly a boost to Alaves. One man who definitely wont be involved is Ever Banega. Sevilla also have a host of significant selection problems though.

The Basques could cause an upset here. That was followed by defeat against a Standard Liege side they hammered 5-1 only a couple of months back and a high tempo game against a pressing Alaves side is the last thing they need right now. This week has been the first one where talk of fatigue being a problem for Sevilla, has really looked like a factor. They faded late on against Valladolid last weekend and needed some good saves to hold on for a 1-0 win.

To add to that, Sevilla had to battle on with 10 men for the final 22 minutes in Liege and while they have some fresh legs to bring in here, there will still be many players starting again. The Basques average 2.33 points per home game this term and are yet to lose in front of their own fans. Even at the best of times this wouldnt be an easy fixture with Alaves in fine home form.

Los Sevillanos are a real force to be reckoned with at home and the fact that they outclassed Real Sociedad 5-2 in their last home fixture in the national championship is surely giving fans a reason for optimism ahead of the visit of Deportivo Alaves. Sevilla and Deportivo Alaves, the two teams who are almost level on points in the La Liga standings, face each other at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Matchday 30.

Sevilla took advantage of Barcelonas slip-ups to claim the very top of the Primera Division standings after winning two on the bounce in the competition. Los Rojiblancos dispatched Valladolid 1-0 last weekend at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan thanks to a 30th-minute goals from teams top scorer Andre Silva. Pablo Machins men are now one point clear at the top of the standings coming into the 14th round fixture against Deportivo Alaves away at Estadio de Mendizorroza.

Anyhow, that is still regarded as the clubs biggest success. Alaves made it to the UEFA CUP final in 2001, but they were beaten by Liverpool 5-4 in a thrilling football clash. Los Babazorros booked their place in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals on four occasions and they have yet to win the Primera Division trophy. The color of Alaves home kit is blue and white and the clubs local rivals are fellow Basque sides Real Sociedad, Athletic Club, Osasuna and Eibar.

In truth, even the games theyve been winning theyve only been edging but their home record is so good since Abelardo took charge, that it would be wrong to suggest theyve been lucky. Alaves have played 12 fewer matches than their opponents and have had a full 9 days to prepare for this one. Their last match saw them sink to a 1-0 defeat at Butarque against Leganesand it was one of their worst performances of the campaign.

Alaves were tipped to struggle but are laying the foundations for an unlikely European challenge, even if Abelardo continues to downplay talk of such a thing. This Sundays late game sees two of the seasons standout performers do battle in Vitoria. Sevilla meanwhile are top of La Liga and if they can remain there into the new year, a genuine title challenge may not be completely out of the question.

Sevilla vs Alaves H2H

Alaves come into this match after one of their worst performances of the season. Abelardo was philosophical after the game indicating that survival was still his main priority this season but with 23 points on the board already, secretly at least he will have loftier ambitions. They were beaten 1-0 at Leganes last Friday night in a game they created precious few openings.

For this round the coach will not be able to count on Manu Garcia, suspended, besides Burgi and Maripn, both with physical problems. Away from home visitors lost 7 of 15 games played. In this way, and playing in a complicated stadium, coach Abelardo should opt for a more defensive strategy, exploring only the spaces left by the opponent. The Alavs arrive to this match with a defeat by 0-4 in the reception to Atletico of Madrid, putting an end to the six consecutive games without losing in the Spanish championship. The offensive Jonathan Calleri is the highlight of the visiting team with 6 goals scored.

The result leaves them most likely needing to win their final group game to secure Europa League progress so there is still work to do there for Pablo Machins men. They held on to beat Valladolid 1-0 at home last Sunday in La Liga to claim top spot with none of the big three winning. However they didnt have such a good time of it in Europe, going down 1-0 to Standard Liege in Belgium. As for Sevilla, theyve had a mixed week.

The question is whether they have what it takes to provide a strong finish in remaining nine rounds of the season? It has been an overwhelming campaign for Abelardo and his troops who have a great chance to secure a place in one of European competitions next season. Alaves are one of two most pleasant surprises of the season as they stand sky-high 5th after 29 rounds of the competition.
