Georgia Tech – Clemson Match Prediction | 26-08-2019 20:00

Collins wants a more pro-style offense for the Yellow Jackets, which means passing the ball more. This is going to be an especially interesting season for the Yellow Jackets, particularly because the program is about to find out just what it is getting from first-year head coach Geoff Collins. The backfield still matters for Georgia Tech, and it could definitely help the team bore a hole through Clemsons stop unit because of its depth. After 11 seasons under Paul Johnson, the Yellow Jackets thrived in a system that prioritizes the option play on offense, resulting in a run-heavy attack that also ranked second in the nation last season with 315.5 rushing yards per contest. Clemsons defense is going to be a tough test for the Yellow Jackets, who are trying to set a new identity offensively. To that end, Georgia Tech will heavily rely on the arms of senior quarterback Tyler Preone, who passed for 1,456 yards and only six touchdowns.

Georgia Tech was 87th in the country in points surrendered on defense with 381 last year. Opponent offenses completed 235 throws on 363 attempts against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets defense last season, ranking them 70th and 35th in the nation. The Georgia Tech pass defense also surrendered a total of 2,747 yards in the air, which was 51st overall in total pass defense. They gave up a total of 4,805 yards on D, which was 51st in D-1. Their rushing defense gave up 442 attempts for 2,058 yards last season, putting them in 63rd place in the country against the run. The Yellow Jackets had 56 penalties for 459 yards on defense last year. That placed them 6th in college football. The Yellow Jackets were 89th in yards per play allowed with 6.

This team will likely struggle on defense for at least an early part of the season and Clemson will give them a workout as they replace nearly all of its front 7 with DL Brandon Adams (24 Tackles, 5.0 TFL) being the only notable returnee. Clemson losses 5 key defensive linemen from last year but will just reload with former 5-stars KJ Henry and Xavier Thomas, a monster who posted 10.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in limited action are expected to break out in a major way. Its hard to give an accurate prediction for Georgia Tech as this will be a team in turmoil as it heads in a new direction an much of the talent in place is not exactly fit for the system that Collins will bring to ATL. DBs Tariq Carpenter (55 Tackles, 2 INTs) and Charlie Thomas are this teams top returning tacklers. Geoff Collins is a defensive guru and will look to implement the toughness and physicality this unit has lacked. Leading tacklers Isiah Simmons, Tre Lamar and Tanner Muse are all back on what was statistically the best defense in all of college football. Just like there offense Georgia Techs defense is a major question mark. AJ Terrell and KVon Wallace round out a veteran secondary that ranked 24th in FBS last fall.

The Clemson Tigers (+200 to win the national title) will begin their defense of the crown they won by beating the Alabama Crimson Tide in the National Championship Game last season with a home matchup with the rebuilding Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (+200,000). Or will the Georgia Tech score an earth-shattering upset victory? Are the Tigers teeth still sharp enough to destroy Georgia Tech just like they did in 2018?

Clemson is playing the long game right now, favored (often heavily) against every opponent on its schedule and trying to establish a championship-level focus and the kind of habits that could be the difference in a College Football Playoff game. Clemson:Avoid the upset. That said, recent losses against Syracuse (2017) and Pittsburgh (2016) have proven that Clemson is not only far from unbeatable in ACC play but just a few plays away from having those playoff chances altered dramatically.

If Paul Johnson was in town this would be a chance to win some money betting the spread on GT to cover but this is going to be a beat down and there is no way around it as Clemson beings its quest to repeat as champions. Nothing like making its debut versus a Clemson team fresh off a nasty 15-0 season where they showed no mercy. This is a hard match-up to try and analyze as for the first time in 11 years the Yellow Jackets will come out with a completely different look on offense.

The setbacks this year have already started piling up: back-to-back close losses to USF and Pitt, injuries to star offensive players and now the potential of starting the year 1-3 with three top-25 teams left on the schedule. Ever since going 11-3 in 2014 and beating Mississippi State in the Orange Bowl, Georgia Tech has been 18-21 and failed to finish with a winning record in ACC play. Georgia Tech:This is a very crucial part of the season for Georgia Tech to avoid making the 2018 campaign the third time in four years that the Yellow Jackets did not finish the season in a bowl game.

Georgia Tech vs. Clemson College Football Predictions, Preview & Betting Tips

With Lawrence delaying his plans to turn pro in the NFL, the Tigers are assured of one thing: that they have the best quarterback in the nation entering the 2019 college football season. Clemsons defense lost some talent over the offseason but it still has Christian Wilkins, Clelin Ferrell, Austin Bryant. Whats left of Clemsons stop unit should be more than enough to give a rebuilding Yellow Jackets program plenty of trouble and headaches. Last season, Lawrence guided the Tigers to a national title and finished the campaign with 3,280 passing yards and 30 touchdowns against just four interceptions. Facing the Yellow Jackets for the Tigers first game of the season should bring plenty of good memories for Lawrence and Clemson because they mauled Georgia Tech in a dominant 49-21 win in Atlanta last season. Dabo Swinney and the Tigers must be very thankful that quarterback Trevor Lawrence decided to come back for at least one more season in Clemson. The Tigers defense also recorded four sacks. In that game, Lawrence tossed four touchdowns and finished with 176 passing yards on 13-for-18 pass completions.

Clemson was ranked 1st in the nation in punt returns with 42 last year. They accumulated 300 punt return yards and averaged 7.1 yards per return, which was 85th in college football. That placed them 98th in Division 1 in punting average. Their punters totaled 2,498 yards on 63 punts, averaging 40 yards per punt. The Clemson Tigers attempted 17 field goals last season and made 11, which was 90th in D-1. Their kickers had a field goal percentage of 65%. They returned 20 kicks for 454 yards on special teams, ranking 100th in kick return yardage. Tigers kickers made 99% of their extra points, going 83 for 84 last year. The Clemson Tigers averaged 23 yards per kick return and they were 3rd in the country in all-purpose yards with 8,191.

Clemson will bring into 2019 what is arguable the nations top offensive unit as they are absolutely stacked. Malachi Carter, 63 and Jaylen Jackson are players to watch at WR as are true freshman Kalani Norris and Ahmarean Brown. Trevor Lawrence enters his Sophomore season as one of the nations top Heisman contenders tossing for 3,280 yards and 30 touchdowns (4 INTs) last season who can beat you with his arm in any way possible. Geoff Collins comes to GA Tech with intentions of completely transforming the Yellow Jackets offense to a more modern based pro-offense. Depth at RB is obviously deep for the Yellow Jackets but the transition for them should be a story to watch as well. This roster is not yet equipped with the talented to fit into this new system but it is still a talented unit. RB Nathan Cotrell gets moved over into the slot with Jalen Camp being the most notable returnee out wide catching only 11 passes in 2018, a team high from a year ago among returning players. Clemsons most stacked positional unit is arguable its receiving core as the duo of Justyn Ross and Tee Higins combined for nearly 2,000 yards on 105 receptions for 21 touchdowns in 2018. The Tigers also have a strong rushing attack that is more than just Travis Etienne (1,658 Yards, 24 TDs) as Lyn-J Dixon should also provide a big impact for a unit that posted 248.2 yards per game on the ground last fall. GT gets back KirVonte Benson who rushed for over 1,050 yards in 2017 (missed 18 with injury) as a versatile back is going to be the catalyst of this offense. The one area that GT doesnt have cause for concern is at QB as 6th year man Lucas Johnson and Tobias Oliver battle for the starting job although neither is exactly suited to take the reigns of a full on passing attack. Jerry Howard and Jordan Mason will also see ample time in the back field combining for over 1,100 yards and 12 touchdowns last fall. WR is the biggest area of concern for this offense as these pass catchers are mainly suited and utilized as blockers.
